How to compare demolition quotes
A low quote is only a bargain if it covers the same work as the others. Use the tool below to check what each written quote includes.
Quote comparison
Tick what each written quote clearly includes. Anything unticked is something to ask about.
Questions to ask every contractor
- Are you licensed and insured, and can I see proof? Ask for the insurance certificate, not just a promise.
- Who pulls the permits, and are they in the price?
- Is an asbestos survey included, and what happens if something is found?
- Who arranges the utility disconnects?
- Where does the debris go, and are disposal fees included? Ask to see the receipts afterward.
- Is the foundation or basement included?
- What clean-up and grading will be left when you finish?
- What happens if you damage a neighbor's property or a utility line?
- What are the payment terms? Be wary of large payments up front.
- What is the schedule, and what could delay it?
Get it in writing
The final agreement should list the scope, the price, what is excluded, the schedule and the payment terms. Anything promised verbally should be written in.
